Economies across the 28 countries expanded by just 0.3 per cent in the last three months of 2015.

It comes amid economic chaos across the continent as the banking sector took a battering and stock markets tumbled this week.

Greece, France, Italy, Austria and Finland dragged down the average across the group of 19 nations who use the Euro.

Even Germany, the regional powerhouse, only managed 0.3 per cent growth, while the UK economy grew 0.5 per cent in the same period.

Eurosceptics will seize on the figures, released on Friday by Brussels statisiticians, as yet more proof that the UK would be better off leaving the EU.
