Zika, which is spreading through the Americas and can cause pregnant women to give birth to babies with shrunken heads, was declared an international emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday.

No cases of the mosquito-born virus have been reported in the UK, but two adults have been confirmed to have had it in Ireland. Both have since fully recovered.

As fears of a global pandemic mount the Government has today ordered airlines to carry out extra checks on all flights travelling to Britain from countries with confirmed transmission, to stop the virus crossing our borders.

Specialist bug killers will be brought in to spray a simple insecticide throughout aircraft before take-off, to reduce the risk of passengers being bitten by any mosquitoes lurking inside.

The process already occurs on the majority of flights from the region as a precaution against malaria.

The move is consistent with advice from WHO Europe.
