Today is payday for millions of people, but the bank has told customers attempting to access their account online to “try later”.

HSBC apologised and said it is doing everything it can to fix the problem after it was “attacked” this morning.

The firm said it successfully defended its systems from criminals.

But HSBC’s online banking is still not available. Its thought the bank’s systems were brought down after attackers flooded the website with traffic in a so-called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

Experts say attacks are often launched with blackmail in mind, or by hackers with a grudge against the company.

Computer security expert Graham Cluley said: “The good news is that a DDoS attack is just disruptive – it doesn’t mean that the security of a website has been breached, or that your personal data might be at risk.

“It’s the equivalent of a large crowd standing outside the doors of a business, preventing you from going in to buy anything.”

But account holders have reacted with anger on social media after previous access issues at the start of January.
