A ‘historic blizzard’ is set to hit Texas and New Mexico today, with up to 15 inches of snow set to fall and seven-foot drifts expected in places.

The tumultuous snowstorm will blitz the two states after moving west from Oklahoma, where fierce winds, rain and snow left people injured and hundreds of homes damaged.

Wind chills of -10 degrees have been forecast in Texas and New Mexico following a weekend of freak weather which has left at least 43 people dead across southern parts of the United States.

The bad weather, or the threat of it, prompted the governors of Missouri and New Mexico to declare a state of emergency for their states.
