It was obvious that he owned no slaves, wasn't interested in questions of state sovereignty, or trade tariffs, had no stake preserving the "southern way of life". When they asked him why he was fighting he had a simple answer- "because y'all are down here". The point is that our presence there is reason enough for many Afghans to fight us. Whether or not we are in the "right" doesn't matter much, unfortunately.
