That was a war by an elite to have and grab more power. Much more power and land than England wanted to offer. It has nothing to do with elites wanting the local yokel to be "free." One can read history from both sides of the pond and then consider the Articles of Confederation, then consider the Anti-Federalist arguments against Federal rule, then look at the Treaty of Paris.
