I noticed you mentioned turning your lawn into a garden. You can go one step further. A few nights ago I saw a TV show(on TLC or Discovery) about emergency survival and the family had set up an aquaponics system in their backyard. This provided them with fish and vegetables in a self sustaining, Eco friendly way. I had never heard of it before. It was awesome. I suggest your readers google search aquaponics to find out more.
