Though it was largely unknown to most Americans prior to the new year, the city of Wuhan in China, where the current coronavirus outbreak is said to have originated, is actually a major transportation hub with railway “spokes” that branch out from the city in nearly every direction.

These connecting arteries are how five million people thus far have been able to leave Wuhan amid this ongoing crisis. Wuhan also has a major airport, which is how infected travelers were able to reach Seattle, New York and other major cities both here in the United States and around the world.

Roughly nine million people still remain in Wuhan, and of these about 2,700 hundred are reportedly under observation by authorities for potential infection. As of Sunday, Wuhan had 533 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and there are believed to be another 500 or so likely cases, according to authorities.

A visual graphic of coronavirus shows the total number of confirmed cases and deaths in real time. This same link also contains a map showing the location of the Hankou, Wuhan and Wuchang train stations from which people were fleeing the city, as well as the location of the Huanan Seafood Market that reports suggest could be ground zero for coronavirus.

“With a population of 11 million, Wuhan is larger than London or New York,” reports explain. “Beijing confirmed the virus had claimed 26 lives in China on January 22. That number had jumped to 80 in just five days by which time the virus had spread around the world.”

Chinese State Council extends Lunar New Year to February 2 amid coronavirus crisis

Despite efforts to contain the virus with a mandatory lockdown, officials in Wuhan have utterly failed to impede its spread not only to other areas of China but also to other countries, including the U.S.

There are multiple confirmed cases of coronavirus in Beijing, for instance, as well as nearly half a dozen-and-growing here in America. Because the spread of the virus is showing no signs of slowing down, the Chinese State Council has extended the Lunar New Year holiday to February 2.

Here in the U.S., the latest confirmed case of coronavirus has been identified in Arizona, where a “member” of Arizona State University – presumably a student – was diagnosed after having traveled to Wuhan over the holidays.

As of this writing, there are at least 44,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus all around the world, with no end in sight.
