According to a report from the Census Bureau, China sent more immigrants to America than any other country during the last decade.

John Binder of Breitbart News reported that between 2018 and 2019, China took Mexico’s spot as the country sending the greatest number of foreign-born immigrants to the U.S. over the last decade. To put this in perspective, more Mexican nationals came to the U.S. than Chinese, Indians, and Canadians combined in 2006.

But in 2018, China began to send the most foreign-born immigrants to America — leap-frogging Canada, India, and Mexico.

Similarly, India has sent more foreign-born immigrants to the U.S. than Mexico since 2010. This pattern of legal immigration has changed the kinds of wage and job burdens in America. Traditionally, Mexican-based migration put pressure on blue-collar workers, but this new migration from Asia is putting more pressure on America’s white-collar workforce.

Annually, 1.2 million legal immigrants come to the U.S. Immigrants from China and India have already transformed certain sectors of the American economy. As of 2015, Chinese immigration in California has topped Mexican immigration to the state. In Silicon Valley, foreign-born nationals hailing from India outnumber Americans in the region’s tech sector.

Since the passage of the 1965 Immigration Act, immigration to America has fundamentally changed. Instead of traditionally European-based migrants coming in, Asians and Latin Americans make up the vast majority of migrants.

Subsequent immigration legislation such as then President George H.W. Bush’s Immigration Act of 1990, expanded legal immigration levels. From 2008 and 2018, the U.S. received more than 10 million legal immigrants. This number represents a foreign population larger than the population of New York City.

The majority of legal immigrants come through the process of “chain migration”, whereby recently naturalized citizens can take in an unlimited number of foreign relatives.

Immigration is a normal process of a country’s development, but it tends to happen in waves, with natural or legislative pauses.
