Hillel Neuer, the Executive Director of UN Watch, criticized the UN for placing Mauritania on its Human Rights Council, while the organization celebrated the abolition of slavery.

On December 2, 2019, the UN was celebrating International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.

In a tweet, the UN declared, “Modern forms of slavery persist around the world. Understanding the scale of the problem is the first step to knowing how to address it. Monday is Abolition of Slavery Day. http://bit.ly/2OoC1e8.”

This post caught Neuer’s attention and he responded accordingly: “You just elected Mauritania, which enslaves 500,000 people, to your highest human rights body.”

In 1981, Mauritania abolished slavery, but the practice still persists in the West African country.

Mauritania joined the UN’s Human Rights Council in October this year, which places it next to countries such as Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia.

Being lumped in with countries like Venezuela — which is experiencing a massive man-made disaster thanks to its socialist policies — is not a good look.

However, the UN doesn’t care much for freedom. It is one of the leading organizations in the promotion of global governance.
