Erick Erickson, who was among the most prominent Never Trumpers in 2016, has come out with an endorsement of Kelly Loeffler, who will likely be appointed to the U.S. Senate.

Loeffler is widely believed to be the preferred pick of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to replace Sen. Johnny Isakson, who is departing at the end of the year due to health issues. Kemp is reportedly going to pick Loeffler over Rep. Doug Collins, who President Donald Trump has suggested for the position.

Erickson wrote in an op/ed for the The Resurgent defending Gov. Kemp’s pick based on identity politics pandering.

“Governor Kemp has already appointed a number of black, Hispanic, and female people to various executive and judicial positions, breaking several appointment records by his predecessors,” he wrote.

“In Loeffler’s case, Kemp wants to attract suburban women back to the GOP. Remember, Kemp will be on the ballot in 2022 with Loeffler. In the meantime, here is what you can and should expect,” he added.

Erickson chided the conservative movement for not getting behind Loeffler, who he claims is an “outsider” despite the fact that she donated a large sum of money to a Super PAC for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2012.

“Conservatives love to say they want outsiders. Kemp is giving them what they want. That parts of the conservative movement are out to destroy Loeffler without knowing anything about her says a lot about the movement,” Erickson wrote.

“It has been burned repeatedly by those it rallied around. But also, the movement is sometimes not willing to take leaps of faith with trusted allies when the movement should,” he added.

“Loeffler has to stop a challenge from the right. She’s smart enough to know it. So is Kemp and his team. That strongly suggests she will not just be an ally to the movement, but will make Georgia proud too,” Erickson concluded.

In his op/ed, Erickson conveniently glossed over Loeffler’s long history as a donor for Democratic Party politicians in Georgia and across the country. He also made excuses for the fact that Loeffler sits on the board of Grady Hospital, the state’s leading abortion provider.
