The FBI and NYPD are warning that ISIS could target the New York City Marathon next weekend in the wake of the killing of the terror group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Authorities, including the FBI, NYPD and Homeland Security, issued a joint threat assessment on Friday – prior to Baghdadi’s death – for the upcoming New York City Marathon.

The warning specifically mentioned the terror group and detailed how ISIS sympathizers have been recently posting propaganda urging attacks in New York, ABC News reports.

U.S. authorities warned that the sympathizers were posting about stabbing onlookers on the street and running over people with a van.

DailyMail.com has contacted the NYPD about their increased security efforts ahead of the marathon on Sunday, which draws in more than 50,000 runners.

The FBI is currently investigating more than 1,000 cases of ISIS suspects in the U.S. alone.

Despite Baghdadi’s death in Syria on Saturday night in a raid carried out by American forces, authorities have warned that the militant group still remains a threat, including in the U.S.

The key to the ISIS is its ‘kill where you are’ ethos, encouraging a far-flung network of followers, including those in the United States, to commit violence however and wherever they can.
