A Kentucky student has been arrested for carrying a loaded handgun onto the premises of his high school.

The 15-year-old – who has not been named publicly – is accused of concealing the weapon in the waistband of his pants while at Great Crossing High School in Georgetown on Wednesday.

A classmate informed the school’s principal, who quickly contacted local police.

The boy was able to located and disarmed by an officer ‘within minutes’, according to The Lexington Herald Leader.

He was immediately taken into custody, but no charges have yet been laid.

In a Facebook post, the Georgetown Police Department wrote that ‘the incident was resolved quickly and with minimal disruption to the daily school activities’.

‘The Georgetown Police Department is proud to partner with our school officials in making your children’s safety of upmost importance,’ they added.

Residents in the state have been on high alert since Monday, when the FBI revealed that they were investigating ‘an unspecified internet threat against schools in Kentucky’.

‘There is no evidence indicating this threat is credible. However, if you see something suspicious online or in person, contact local law enforcement or the FBI,’ the bureau said in a statement.
