Two men were killed and three others suffered gunshot wounds in a shooting that took place near the campus of Alabama State University overnight.

Officers with the Montgomery Police Department responded to the 800 block of North University Drive at around 7.15pm to find a mortally wounded man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Jarrett Williams said another victim died at a hospital, while three other men were being treated for gunshot wounds.

Of the three surviving victims, one sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

‘The investigation is in its early stages and information is limited at this time,’ Williams said.

Alabama State University President Quinton Ross released a statement to Montgomery Advertiser addressing the deadly shooting near the campus.

‘We have been assured that this shooting incident did not actually occur on campus but at a nearby business,’ Ross stated. ‘University officials are still working with the Montgomery Police Department to determine the details of this incident.

‘Our prayers are with the families and friends of those who were victims in this shooting.’

By Friday morning, dried blood could still be seen staining the ground at the scene.

So far, the names of the victims have not been made public.
