Last night’s election results will turn into an unprecedented nightmare for the European Union’s elite, according to polling guru Sir John Curtice. The clear triumph of Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party, which topped the polls with 32 percent, could spell huge danger for Brussels. The Brexit Party was the clear winner in the European elections, with the pro-EU Lib Dems coming second.
At the same time, the Conservatives and Labour suffered heavy losses, with the former expected to get less than 10 percent of the vote.
Sir John told the BBC that the EU’s decision to force the UK to hold the controversial elections, after granting the country a Brexit extension, had horribly backfired.
He explained: “The electorate has moved in favour of those who will contemplate no-deal such as Farage’s Brexit Party or those that are clearly on the side of Remain, like the Lib Dems and the Greens.
“These are the two views that voters wanted to express, much more over May and Labour’s compromise and fudge positions.
“The implication for the EU is that if you think that Britain would get any closer to resolving its Brexit impasse because of holding the EU elections you insisted we hold, the answer to that is no.
“Instead, this vote has made the impasse more difficult to resolve, not easier.”
It was the the worst performance for the Conservatives since the 1830s.
According to BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, the Conservatives would have failed to take a single seat if the vote was first-past-the-post.
