President Trump mocked an Obama-era White House lawyer after his indictment on charges stemming from the Mueller probe.
Trump said that it should have been front page news that ‘very serious charges’ were brought against former White House Counsel Greg Craig on Thursday.
‘This is a really big story, but the Fake News New York Times didn’t even put it on page one, rather page 16,’ he said.
He admitted the Washington Post put the scandal on the front page of their Friday paper but complained that was ‘not much better’ because it was ‘ “tiny” page one.’ Trump called the outlets ‘corrupt’ in the tweet that came that accompanied a longer set of gripes about the special counsel probe and Democratic lawmakers.
Trump said Capitol Hill Democrats should stop wasting ‘time and money’ trying to get their hands on the full, unredacted Mueller report and focus on the crisis at the border.
He said minutes later, ‘Even the Democrats now say that our Southern Border is a Crisis and a National Emergency. Hopefully, we will not be getting any more BAD (outrageous) court decisions!’
As Trump tweeted from the residence of the White House on Friday morning – a day when he had a light public schedule – Craig arrived at a Washington, D.C. courthouse for his arraignment.
A grand jury indicted the prominent attorney who worked for former Democratic Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton on Thursday in connection to foreign lobbying uncovered Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigators.
Craig, who worked alongside former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort for a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine, allegedly failed to register as a foreign agent, in violation of U.S. law. He is fighting the charges.
‘Mr. Craig is not guilty of any charge and the government’s stubborn insistence on prosecuting Mr. Craig is a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion,’ Attorneys William Taylor and William Murphy said in a Wednesday statement.
