RUSSIA has vowed to do everything possible to stop any potential US military intervention in Venezuela.

Venezuela’s executive vice-president, Delcy Rodriguez, is currently on a working visit to Moscow where he met top Putin ally Valentina Matviyenko.

Ms Matiyenko, speaker of Russia’s upper house, told Mr Rodriguez her country is against any external meddling in the affairs of sovereign states, despite widespread accusations Moscow has interfered in foreign elections.

She indicated Russia fears America is plotting to “stage provocations” as a means to send troops and military aid into the Venezuela.

Ms Matiyenko told Mr Rodriguez: “We are very afraid that the United States may stage any provocations to provoke bloodshed and find a reason and pretext for intervention in Venezuela.

“But we will do our utmost to prevent this.

“I’m sure that you were able to see that Russia feels sympathy with what is happening in Venezuela and solidarity with the people of Venezuela and supports the legitimate government in its fight for sovereignty and the country’s independence.”

Moscow backed its South American partner Nicálas Maduro after opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself Venezuelan interim president in January.

Mr Guaido was supported by the United States and recognised by western countries including Britain and the rest of the European Union.

The move sparked widespread civil unrest across Venezuela and Mr Guaido has faced difficulty cementing his position as president.

Ms Matviyenko accused the United States of creating the crisis artificially and called for dialogue between all those involved.

She said: “We are absolutely sure that the crisis, which was artificially created by the US in Venezuela, can be solved only by peaceful means and only in the framework of the inclusive dialogue of all political forces and the Venezuela people have the right to decide on its present and its future.
