President Donald Trump landed in Hanoi Tuesday evening local time for his second summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after flying halfway around the world in a bid to try to persuade the leader of the hermetic regime to relinquish nuclear weapons.
The president’s entrance, a relatively low-key arrival, occurred precisely as his longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, appeared in the Capitol corridors to deliver closed testimony in the Senate – a development that was set to shadow Trump’s diplomacy with high stakes testimony before three separate panels.
Air Force One landed in Vietnam in darkness after a flight that included two stops for refueling. The president waved to a small crowd that gathered for his arrival, before slowly walking down a staircase to greet Vietnamese dignitaries.
He stepped onto a red carpet and chatted with attendees of the sedate diplomatic ceremony before getting into his motorcade.
Trump then headed toward one of the growing city’s premiere hotels in a motorcade that included a motorcycle escort.
His counterpart Kim Jong Un crossed into Vietnam with considerable fanfare and a red carpet of his own earlier Tuesday – as an attendant scurried looking like his life depended on it to catch up to be by the absolute leader’s side.
He had traveled by bullet-proof train through China on a 2,800 mile journey, accompanied by dozens of security guards who sprinted to surround him as he entered the Hotel where he will stay until his summit with President Trump.
Both men were presented with bouquets of flowers upon arrival.
Included in Kim’s lengthy motorcade that snaked its way through the Vietnamese capital was an armored vehicle complete with a mounted gun turret on top. It later parked itself around the corner from Kim’s hotel, while locals on scooters made their way through the city’s packed streets.
As he reached his final destination, Kim’s team of protective agents jumped out of a line of black SUVs to enter Kim’s hotel. They could be seen riding with vehicle doors open, then rushing to the heavily-guarded leader.
An administration official was unable to identify the sprinting North Korean, but noted to DailyMail.com: ‘He’s fast.’
