The three-day show of military strength “to protect the territorial waters” began yesterday and covers an expanse of more than 770,000 square miles in the Strait of Hormuz, Sea of Oman and Indian Ocean. The large-scale drills showcase Iran’s newest warships, a “state-of-the-art” submarine that was launched last week and a Moudge-class destroyer, Sahand, introduced in December. Iran’s navy is also set to involve hundreds of other equipment, including surface ships, submarines, hovercraft, planes and helicopters.

The brand-new submarine named Fateh (Conqueror), is equipped with cruise missiles and torpedoes, according to Iran’s military.

Meanwhile, the homemade destroyer Sahand is said to have radar-evading stealth properties, meaning it could be particularly difficult to detect by enemies.

According to Iranian navy’s official media, the purpose of the exercise is “to protect the territorial waters of our country, maintain lines of communication and promote the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Iran’s military personnel have said the exercise is for defence purposes only.

Talking to local news, Rear Admiral Khanzadi said: ”For the first time, these weapons will be tested seriously and we can make the maritime region unsafe for the enemy in any way possible.

“The exercise will cover confronting a range of threats, testing weapons, and evaluating the readiness of equipment and personnel.

“Submarine missile launches will be carried out in addition to helicopter and drone launches from the deck of the Sahand destroyer.”

The show of might comes weeks after Iran displayed a new cruise surface-to-surface missile with a range of 800 miles during celebrations to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
