The earthquake hit at a depth of 367.93km, 47km north west of the town of Namatanai at 2.35pm UTC today. A tsunami warning is currently in effect for the surrounding area, according to the Mirror. No injuries have been reported, but it is not the first time the region has been struck by a quake over the last year.

On February 26 2018 an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck the islands.

Up to 160 people were killed and many others were injured.

An aftershock of M6.0 then killed 11 people on March 4.
