Ebola is currently ravaging parts of Africa, with fears the disease is about to explode in numbers.

The outbreak has become the second deadliest in history, infecting approximately three people a day.

And health professionals were terrified the disease could spread to Europe after a patient displayed Ebola-like symptoms in Sweden.

Although the outbreak was contained, experts still fear the disease could cross continents and cause devastation.

Harvard health scholar Dr Ashish Jha told Daily Star Online how easily the disease could be spread.

He told us: “While there’s an outbreak happening there’s always the chance the somebody could get on a plane and transmit the disease.

“As the disease gets worse in the DRC, the greater the chance is of that happening.

“It’s the same for the US, and that goes for China and India too.

“We’ve been very lucky so far.”

So far, 488 people have died in this ebola epidemic, making it the second worst outbreak ever.

Although Dr Jha does not believe it will become the deadliest ever, where 11,310 people where killed, but the death toll could still “explode”.

He added: “Because of the fighting going on in the area, this outbreak could explode in numbers.

“Fighting stops medical personnel from doing their jobs.

“It only takes then disease to spread into another country, then a whole new set of people could get infected..”

Numerous militia groups are at war in the north-east of Congo, already ravaged by the disease.

Reports have even claimed the groups are attacking health workers trying to treat people.
