Newly elected Congresswoman and rising star of the Democrat party Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Donald Trump was ‘scared’, after he vowed in his State of the Union address that America would ‘never be a socialist country’.

The President delivered his second State of the Union to Congress last night, in which he admitted being ‘alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country’.

‘America was founded on liberty and independence – not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free,’ Trump said.

‘Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.’

His comments were an explicit rebuke to self-proclaimed democratic socialist Ocasio-Cortez, who said in an interview with Fox News afterwards: ‘I thought it was great.

‘I think he’s scared. He sees that everything is closing in on him.’

She later told MSNBC that Trump launched the ‘ad hominem attack’ to distract from his failings on issues such as securing funds for his wall on the Mexican border.

‘I think he sees himself losing on the issues, he sees himself losing on the wall in the southern border, and he needs to grasp at an attack and this is his way of doing it,’ she said.

The 29-year-old Congresswoman sniped on Twitter after Trump’s address when political commentator Peggy Noonan said she had a ‘rare bad night’ because she wasn’t looking as spirited and warm as usual but more ‘sullen, teenaged and at a loss’.

‘Why should I be ‘spirited and warm’ for this embarrassment of a #SOTU? Tonight was an unsettling night for our country. The president failed to offer any plan, any vision at all, for our future. We’re flying without a pilot. And I’m not here to comfort anyone about that fact,’ Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

Bernie Sanders also ripped into Trump’s speech during his response. He also rolled his eyes when the President said America would never be a socialist country.

Sanders, who ran against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and is thought to be mulling entering the race in 2020, said: ‘When you’re president, you bring our people together.

‘But in an unprecedented way, that is not what this president is doing. In fact, he is trying to divide us up; he is trying to have one group turn against another group. And that is certainly not what this country is supposed to be about. ‘
