The Dominican Republic, located in the Caribbean, was hit by a 5.3 earthquake earlier this afternoon. The US Geological Society said the earthquake struck at 9.33am local time (2.33pm GMT) at a depth of 42 miles. The earthquake was also felt in Haiti, which shares an island with Dominican Republic, and nearby the US territory of Puerto Rico.

Testimonies of the earthquake were left on geological-monitoring website EMSC-CSEM.

One resident of the capital said: “Very strong in Santo Domingo, felt on the 10th floor of a residential complex. Long and strong movement with small objects displaced.”

Another simply said: “Very strong!”
