Indonesia earthquake: Series of tremors up to 6.1 magnitude hit infamous tsunami island

AN EARTHQUAKE has struck off Sumatra island in Indonesia.

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit near Sumatra island at a depth of 10km on Saturday. There were no immediate reports of damage and no potential for a tsunami, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake struck near South Pagai, one of the Mentawai Islands, whch was hit by the 2007 Sumatra earthquakes and the 2010 Mentawai earthquake and tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire area in the Pacific Ocean where the majority of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

In December, the country was hit by a deadly tsunami which struck the Sunda Strait, leaving hundreds of people dead.

And devastating earthquakes hit parts of the island of Lombok in July and August, and an earthquake and tsunami killed more than 2,000 people on a remote part of Sulawesi island in September.
