WHITEHALL officials could introduce martial law to stop “civil disobedience” amid fears people will die over food and medical shortages if the UK leaves the bloc without a deal.

Government staff are looking at introducing legislation under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 which would allow ministers to impose curfews, travel bans, confiscate property and deploy the armed forces to stop rioting. They can also amend any act of parliament, except the Human Rights Act, for a maximum of 21 days. A Whitehall Source told the Sunday Times the only thing that could be compared to a no-deal Brexit would be a major Europe-wide war.

The source said: “Although there is nothing that can replicate the scale of the chaos threatened by a no-deal Brexit, which will be about a thousand times worse than the volcanic-ash-cloud crisis, this is about the closest example we have in modern British history.

“The only other thing that would be comparable would be something like a major Europe-wide war.”

The possibility of introducing the legislation, which is to be used to deal with national emergencies such as acts of war and terrorism, was brought to the table last week as part of the final stages of the contingency planning for Operation Yellowhammer.

Another source said: “The overriding theme in all the no-deal planning is civil disobedience and the fear that it will lead to death in the event of food and medical shortages.”

While a senior source added: “As no-deal preparations are accelerated and training is rolled out to civil servants, questions have been raised about the legislation and how it could be used in the event of a no-deal Brexit,”

The drastic move has been labelled by sources as Whitehall “prepping” for all possibilities.

Critics have described the legislation as “truly draconian”.
