With the abrupt cancellation of the world tour of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), President Donald Trump is sending a strong message to world leaders, and Pelosi herself, that he is still president despite losing the House of Representatives to Pelosi and the Democrats this month. The move by Trump comes the day after Pelosi made an insulting power play against Trump by ‘asking’ him to postpone the State of the Union Address, previously set for January 29 by Pelosi, over her claimed security concerns related to the government shutdown.

With Trump staying at the White House to negotiate a deal with Pelosi to reopen the partially shutdown government and fund a border wall, Pelosi was set to represent herself to the world as the de facto president of the United States in meetings with NATO leaders in Brussels this week. President Trump monkey wrenched the plans of ‘President Pelosi’ to usurp his presidency by canceling her Congressional Delegation trip to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan.

Last week Trump announced he was canceling his trip to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that runs from January 22-25 so that he could stay home and negotiate with Democrats on funding the border wall.

Trump’s assertion of presidential command is reminiscent of President Ronald Reagan firing 11,000 illegally striking air traffic controllers in August 1981. That move by Reagan showed he would not be pushed around and was a leader to be reckoned with at home and abroad. Similarly, by responding to Pelosi’s moves to usurp his presidency and diminish his standing on the world stage, Trump has sent a clear message to Pelosi and the world to not test him.
