A VOLCANO in the southern Italian city of Naples could cause “devastation” across central Italy if it were to face a large-scale eruption, warned volcanologist Christopher Kilburn.

Italy’s Campi Flegrei volcano could erupt and destroy up to 100 cubic kilometres (62 miles) of land surrounding the volcano, warned Dr Christopher Kilburn, a professor at University College London and expert in volcanic hazard. Dr Kilburn said there is “absolutely no evidence” of a large scale caldera-forming eruption “any time soon” but warned the Campi Flegrei volcano is “active and will erupt again” at some point in the future.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Kilburn said: “Over time periods of many tens of thousands of years, it is possible that there may be a repeat of a caldera-forming event.”

The volcanologist said it is important to note that in the volcanic area surrounding Campi Flegrei “there is evidence” of half a dozen large forming eruptions in the last 250,000 years and the likelihood of another large scale eruption should not be ruled out.

He said: “You do have to take into account the possibility that there may be another large scale eruption and by that, I mean something of the order of perhaps 50 cubic kilometres or maybe even 100 cubic kilometres.

“So you might wonder that you are getting to the scale that events are so large there is almost nothing you can do about them.

“If they happen, they happen, and you have to do the best you can once they have started.”

The volcanologist, who has worked closely with the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples to analyse the volcano, urged people living in the area not to worry about the active volcano.

He added: “It is important to be reassured that plans are being made and not to be worried every day that something might happen because that is actually not the case.”
