The southwestern European nation is more commonly associated with scorching Mediterranean temperatures but Greeks woke up to a very different scene this morning – and weren’t prepared for it. Euronews reporter Fay Doulgkeri explained that there had been widespread disruption across the country and, in particular, Athens, as public transport had suffered. She said: “Good morning from white Athens.

“I have to tell you that this morning everyone here woke up in a city that we’re not used to.

“We had this heavy snowfall in the previous decade just twice.

“I think it’s the first time that this has happened in this decade.

“There were problems with the public transport in Athens.

“The biggest problem we have is with the national road which is cut in two – this is the road that connects the north and south of Greece.

“It’s closed right now so that drivers aren’t trapped because there’s still heavy snowfall.

“It’s not snowing right now in Athens – the temperature is around zero degrees.”
