President Donald Trump went to bat for his wall at the US-Mexico border by quoting his predecessors.

The commander-in-chief sent out tweets early Sunday morning that drew on past statements made by former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

‘”We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked…” Barrack [sic] Obama, 2005,’ the first part of the tweet reads, which was spoken by Obama at a December 2005 press conference in Florida.

The tweet goes on to quote Clinton from a high school town hall event in November 2015: ‘”I voted, when I was a Senator, to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in…” Hillary Clinton, 2015.’

In a tweet that followed just half an hour later, Trump said the wall would stop illegal border crossing and crime.

‘The only reason they do not want to build a Wall is that Walls Work! 99% of our illegal Border crossings will end, crime in our Country will go way down and we will save billions of dollars a year!’ he wrote.

‘A properly planned and constructed Wall will pay for itself many times a year!’

Speaking to reporters later on Sunday, Trump said he may declare a national emergency to get the wall built.

Money for the border wall has been the central conflict of a partial government shutdown that began on December 22, now in its sixteenth day.
