MI5 intelligence chiefs fear aerial assaults involving up to a dozen weaponised drones could be used against civilian and military targets.

These are said to include Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament, the SAS HQ in Hereford and royal palaces. Spies have already discovered that British terrorists downloaded instructions on weaponising shop-bought drones from the internet.

The plans, believed to have been drawn up by ISIS, show how drones could be reconfigured to carry explosives. The documents advise terror groups to train drone pilots to maximise the impact of attacks.

Weaponised drones were discussed by MI5 and senior Government figures in the wake of the fiasco at Gatwick Airport.

The Prime Minister and Cabinet colleagues were said to be shocked that Britain’s second largest airport could be closed by a drone sighting.

One senior intelligence source said: “The closure of Gatwick airport and the disruption caused revealed two things – firstly the UK does not have an effective counter-drone programme.
