Four people including a 13-year-old girl have been arrested after clashes with police near the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street.

Around 100 people wearing trademark hi-viz jackets descended on Westminster for the protest and marched along Whitehall towards Trafalgar Square, causing major disruption and setting off smoke bombs as they went.

Scotland Yard said a schoolgirl had been arrested on suspicion of assaulting police.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Four arrests have been made following protests on Westminster Bridge, SW1 at approximately 11am today.

“Three men were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

“A 13-year-old girl was also arrested on suspicion of assault on police.”

There were traffic delays in Westminster and towards the Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus areas.

Footage posted on sociald media showed some protestors sitting down in the road to stop traffic while others hurled smoke bombs.

Transport For London issued a travel alert for the area.

It said: “The crowd has formed up in the Parliament Square/Whitehall area and are intermittently causing traffic holds.

“We have very little details on the demo but expect further traffic holds and delays in the Westminster area.”
