A GERMAN left-wing movement with hundreds of thousands of followers has threatened to “take to the streets” in the style of France’s ‘Yellow Vests’ that have taken part in dozens of violent protests, which have led to at least ten deaths.

Sahra Wagenknecht has called upon members of her Aufstehen movement, which was founded to mobilise Germany’s left-wing, to use the deadly protests against the raising cost of living in France as encouragement to force change. The movement has almost 170,000 signed-up members and is modelled on the Jeremy Corbyn-supporting Momentum group, which has become is highly influential on the Labour Party. Ms Wagenknecht, the public face of Aufstehen, warned the German government that its failure to tackle growing levels of inequality could become the driving force behind a potential protest movement.

She said: “We have big plans for next year, not least because we recognise when people go on to the streets to protest – especially those who have not had a political voice for many years who rediscovered their voice by protesting – then political change can happen.

“This is what we’re seeing in France right now.”

But she was keen to distance herself from the violent element of France’s ‘Yellow Vests’ after Paris suffered weeks of violent protests, which have resulted in at least 10 people being killed, shops being looted and historic landmarks defaced.

“I think it’s completely wrong to reduce the Yellow Vest movement in France to violence,” Ms Wagenknecht said.

“Of course, there are those ready for violence amongst the protesters, but the movement is much broader than that.

“I’m clear that we don’t want any violence, but at the same time you have to recognise that it is a clear expression of pent-up anger. It doesn’t come out of nowhere.”

It is not clear how the protests could be arranged to Germany but the Marxist politician, who rose to fame through the Die Linke party, believes they will emerge on the streets this year.

She said: “We will be visible on the street and in the public eye in 2019.”
