The quake had a depth of around 100km (60 miles).

It hit at around 11.08pm Sunday night UK time.

The epicentre was 84km north of the Tongan capital Nuku`alofa.

It is currently unclear if there are any casualties or if there is wide-scale damage.

According to the Richter scale, an earthquake of a magnitude between 6.1 and 6.9 “may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas”.

Tonga lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area which is often hit with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

About 70% of the world’s volcanoes are located in the Ring of Fire.

Every year, around 90% of the world’s earthquakes take place in this geographical area.

The notorious strip extends from New Zealand in the west, to the Philippines, up to Russia and towards the US, where it passes along Alaska and the west coast into South America.
