German Christmas markets and Christmas traditions are amongst the most famous in the world, but the country’s culture is changing, a poll shows.

The poll, carried out by statistics agency YouGov, shows that 17 million Germans no longer participate in Christmas festivities.

Young adults especially, between 18 and 30 years old, no longer celebrate Christmas. The large majority of them are males.

Part of the explanation, around 20 per cent of the group that doesn’t do Christmas festivities, has to do with Muslim migrants in the country.

Other explanations for the decrease in Christmas are economic and avoiding the Christmas hype. The feast is expensive for many families and by ignoring it, the money can be spent on other things.

The survey does show that Christmas remains the largest festival in Germany.
