A tsunami has crashed into Indonesia’s popular Sunda Strait tourist area, between Java and Sumatra, on Saturday nigght local time. The tsunami was reportedly spawned by an eruption of the Anak Krakatoa volcano, which may have caused underwater landslides. Indonesia’s disaster management agency has urged people to stay away from the coast amid fears another tsunami could strike.
Dramatic pictures and video are beginning to emerge from some of the worst-hit areas.
One photo shows rescuers frantically searching for survivors in front of a collapsed building on the South Lampung coast.
A team of assorted emergency services and volunteers are pictured scouring fragments of a fleet of fighting boats on a beach.
And shocking aerial views show the remnants of houses which have all but been swept away by the deadly waves.
The worst-affected area was the Pandeglang region of Banten province in Java.
This area covers beaches popular with locals and tourists alike, in Ujung Kulon National Park.
Of the confirmed 222 deaths, 33 were in Pandeglang.
Hundreds of locals took refuge at the governor’s office in the southern Sumatran city of Bandar Lampung.
