An magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocked the area 101 miles south-southwest of the town of Jayapura, Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Sunday. The USGS first reported the quake centre at a distance of 174 km from Jayapura, it was temporarily upgraded to a higher magnitude of 6.2 before dropping back to 6.1 upon review. Abepura is one of the largest cities in Papua, with a population of 62,248, but within some distance of the coast. Whether there is a tsunami warning for the city depends on the tremor location.

Is there a tsunami warning for Abepura?

Abepura resides near the coast of Papua, and could be endangered by a powerful tsunami.

The 1998 Papua New Guinea earthquake resulted in nearby Jayapura – the largest city in the region – being struck by the Aitape tsunami.

More than 200 people were killed by the onslaught, leaving many wary of another event in the future.

However today there have been no warnings of tsunami activity, likely due to the earthquake’s location.

Today’s earthquake took place inland, far enough from the coast to negate any tsunami risks.

Although the tremors had the potential to cause serious damage, the depth they took place would have meant this was limited.

The total depth for today’s earthquake was 37 miles, meaning shockwaves are quite far down.

As a result, those above would not feel the full force of the magnitude, and much less damage is dealt compared to if the earthquake had taken place on the surface.
