More than 1,100 flights have been cancelled by American Airlines on Sunday as a storm sweeps through the southern US.

Over 220 flights were cancelled on Saturday with more passenger disruption expected on Monday when 300 flights will be cancelled.

A severe weather system dubbed Winter Storm Diego will sweep through the southern US and up the Atlantic coast over the weekend, bringing with it a widespread mess of snow, sleet and freezing rain, meteorologists say.

Winter storm watches, advisories and warnings have been issued across a massive area spanning from New Mexico to North Carolina.

The majority of cancellations are for flights to and from Charlotte, North Carolina, where American Airlines has a major hub.

The company said it will reduce operations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport beginning Saturday night.

All flights to and from Charlotte on American’s regional partners are canceled for Sunday and more than two out of three of its other Charlotte flights are canceled.

Since Charlotte is a major connecting hub for American Airlines, the cancellations are also expected impact passengers headed to and from destinations not affected by the storms.

The storm system is currently dumping snow and freezing rain in western Texas and southwestern Oklahoma, and an area of wintry precipitation has developed from northern Arkansas into northern Tennessee.
