Speaking to about 80,000 people at a Lega rally in Rome, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister blamed Emmanuel Macron’s austerity policies and the EU for the deadly yellow vests protests in the French capital. Mr Salvini claimed the core paradigm set out in the EU Treaties are currently undeliverable by member states because of the contrasting attitude of the Brussels institutions against Governments’ economic proposals.

He told the crowd: “You tell me how it is possible to guarantee what is written in the institutional Treaties.

“Full employment, sustainable growth, solidarity between states and citizens.

“Look at the images coming from Paris.

“Remember those that came from Greece. Look at the economic crisis that even the super powerful Germany is starting to experience.

“Think of the yellow vests who are guaranteeing public order in this square and are protesting in Paris.

“I want to say violence is not and will never be justified anywhere but who sows poverty collects protests.”

The yellow vest protests in the French capital escalated on Saturday with protesters firing gas canisters against police officers and holding up banners calling for France to leave the European Union.

More than 400 people have already been arrested with thousands of protesters breaking police barriers to inundate the streets of Paris.

The so-called gilets jaunes have been protesting against French President Emmanuel Macon’s policies for the fourth weekend in a row.
