FRANCE is on the brink of a civil war and its people are suffering, Jacline Mouraud, a prominent activist within the “yellow vests” protest movement against rising fuel and living costs, warned on Monday.

The grassroots movement began as a spontaneous rebellion against rising fuel prices, but has morphed into a broader outpouring of anger against the government’s economic policies. She told Europe 1 radio: “France is suffering and the government needs to wake up. “We are no longer one step away from an insurgency, we are one step away from a civil war!” President Emmanuel Macron’s government “is to blame for the unrest,” she continued, adding that the 40-year-old centrist and his ministers had “let the situation deteriorate by refusing to take protesters seriously”.

The so-called “yellow vest” movement, which started on November 17 as a social media protest group named for the high-visibility jackets all motorists in France must have in their cars, has focused on denouncing a squeeze on household spending power brought about by Mr Macron’s carbon taxes on fuel.

However, over the past three weeks the protests have ballooned into a wider, broadbrush anti-Macron uprising, with many accusing the president of pursuing economic policies they say favour the rich and hurt the poor, and some violent fringe groups calling for Mr Macron to resign.

But Mr Macron says the fuel tax increases are part of his efforts to combat climate change and persuade French drivers to exchange diesel-fuelled cars for less polluting models. He has repeatedly refused to deviate from his policy goals.

But violent demonstrations over the weekend which turned Paris into a battle zone and led to scores of injuries and arrests paved the way for an unexpected government U-turn.
