The 6.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Nicaragua, sparking warnings of tsunamis along the coasts of nearby Colombia, Costa Rica and Honduras.

Both the European earthquake monitoring agency (EMSC) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was a risk of tsunamis.

The quake’s epicentre was near the Colombian island of Providencia 36km (22 miles) southeast of Mountain, in Colombia, and was about 10km (six miles) deep.

Earthquakes can occur anywhere from zero to 487 miles (800km) below the earth’s surface according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The RIng of Fire stretches for 40,000km and covers several major fault lines.

For these reasons, it is particularly prone to earthquakes.

Mount Agung in Bali is one of hundreds of active volcanoes in the Ring of Fire.

The tsunami threat isn’t thought to be major and there are no tsunami risks for the US coast, the Gulf of Mexico or the eastern coast of Canada, the USGS said.

So far there are no reports of damage or casualties.

The governorship of the Colombian province of San Andrés Archipelago, Providencia and Santa Catalina also said it has not issued an official tsunami alarm for Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) wrote in a tweet: “According to Colombia Maritime Authority the earthquake of magnitude 6.1 and depth of 10km was in the vicinity of San Andrés and Providencia.

“There is no tsunami warning for the coasts of the Colombian Caribbean.”
