THE EBOLA outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been raging for four months.

And experts from the US Centres for Disease Control are struggling to contain it.

Dr Pierre Rollin told US media Ebola outbreaks are usually stopped within “three, four months maximum”.

But the outbreak is the biggest in the Congo’s history — with more than 300 people infected.

Dr Rollin added: “It’s as if we’re just starting now when in fact we started three months ago.

“We’re not making any progress.”

There are around 30 new cases of Ebola every week.

The blood borne virus causes internal and external bleeding.

It is often transmitted to people caring for sick relatives who do not wear protective clothing.

Dr Rollin said: ”Usually you have one or two months before you detect it.”

“There are still a lot of people that are not detected in time,” he added.

“I was looking at the last 30 days of cases and two-thirds of them were of unknown origin – so we can’t trace them.”

Response teams are being hampered by the conflict in the region — caught in crossfire between Congolese military factions.

They have also been assaulted by members of the community.

Tensions could rise further in December, when the country holds national elections.

“We have no idea what’s going to happen, what the result will be – and whether it’s going to be accepted,” said Dr Rollin.v
