Tributes have poured in for the sheriff’s sergeant killed during a mass shooting at a country music bar in Southern California last night.

Ron Helus was shot dead after confronting a gunman who’d opened fire on innocent revelers during an under 21s student night at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks.

He was the first responder at the scene and was ‘struck with multiple gun shots’ after going inside the venue to protect civilians.

The sergeant, who served with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office for 29 years, has been described as a ‘hero’.

‘Ron was a hardworking dedicated sheriff’s sergeant. He was totally committed, he gave his all,’ Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters at the scene last night.

‘As I told his wife, he died a hero; he went into save lives, to save other people,’ he said.
