Angela Merkel “will not stand for re-election as head of CDU party” at the next party conference in December or re-stand as German Chancellor after 2021.

Conservative MP for Stone in Staffordshire, Sir Bill Cash warned against the German Chancellor taking over from President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.

Mr Juncker has made clear that he will not run for a second term as President of the European Commission when his current spell expires in November 2019.

Mrs Merkel suggested she “won’t seek any further political offices”, but Sir Bill Cash has warned her taking over from Mr Juncker would continue the “German domination of Europe”.

The Tory MP told Express.co.uk: “If she were to replace Jean-Claude Juncker, that would be entirely consistent with the trajectory of German policy and she would be in charge with Martin Selmayr of the European Commission and continue the German domination of Europe to an even greater extent.

“If she could go for the Head of Commission to replace Jean-Claude Juncker that would reinforce German predominance in Europe in line with their existing strategy.”

Commenting on Mrs Merkel’s decision to step down, the Tory MP said: “The fact that Chancellor Merkel steps down will not fundamentally change German policy because they call all the shots in Europe.

“They decided the guidelines for Brexit and as Paul Lever makes clear in his book published recently called Berlin Rules – this is the ‘golden age of German power’ – This will continue after Merkel.
