The epicentre of the 6.8 magnitude quake was located in the Ionian Sea, near the Greek Island of Zante and about 50 miles north-east of the city of Pyrgos.

The quake had a depth of around 16 kilometres.

So far, three people have been taken to hospital.

The series of earthquakes have continued into Friday early afternoon around the islands of Lithakia and Mouzaki.

The quakes to rock the area following the big 6.8 one had lower magnitudes of between 4.5 and 5.2.

One British tourist Joanna Jones described the 6.8 magnitude earthquake experience as being in Jumanji.

She said: “Have you seen the new Jumanji? That was exactly what it was like. The floor, beds and every bit of furniture bouncing and shaking up and down.”

Thirty minutes before the powerful earthquake struck, a quake with a magnitude of five stuck close to Lithakia.

Civil protection agency press spokesman Spyros Gorgiou said: “We’re checking out the villages on the islands, where there are several older buildings.

“The lack of electricity is a problem, but technicians are trying to restore power.”

A witness said online: “Me and my partner are staying in Zante, it woke my partner up, and we’ve had three aftershocks much smaller, the larger quake has moved several items around the room.”

Another witness described the tremors to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) saying there was “extremely violent shaking”.

He added: “Objects fell off shelves.

“Loud rumbling.”
