A 6.7 magnitude tremor has rocked near the far east coast near the Russian Kurile Islands.

The quake struck at 9.10pm local time (12.10pm UK) in the Sea of Okhotsk just north west of the isands.

There was no immediate threat of a tsunami, according to the US National Weather Service.

It comes just days after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the very same area.

The Kuril arc is a chain of 56 islands covered in volcanoes that form a volcanic archipelago of almost 1,300 km

The area, in Russia’s Sakhalin Oblast region, sits near the Pacific Ocean’s dreaded Ring of Fire.

This is a horseshoe-shaped belt running around the ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

About 90% of all earthquakes occur here, with the ring being home to 75% of all the active volcanoes on earth.

And because the Kuril islands is home to so many volcanoes, this is one of the most active parts of the Ring of Fire.
