President Donald Trump attacked Democrats on Wednesday in a newspaper op-ed, claiming that handing them control of Congress in November would bring America ‘dangerously closer to socialism’ by pushing the nation toward socialized medicine.

‘Medicare for All’ has become liberals’ new shorthand for what was previously known as a ‘single payer’ health care system, one whose costs are organized by one large public agency.

Democrats aim to ‘establish a government-run, single-payer health care system that eliminates all private and employer-based health care plans,’ the president wrote in an essay for USA Today, ‘and would cost an astonishing $32.6 trillion during its first 10 years.’

And ‘[g]overnment-run health care is just the beginning,’ he added. ‘Democrats are also pushing massive government control of education, private-sector businesses and other major sectors of the U.S. economy.’

The president omitted any mention of what progressive Democrats claim would be improved benefits for seniors. Instead, he wrote, their central idea means seniors on traditional Medicare benefits ‘would no longer be able to depend on the benefits they were promised.’

A plan pushed by 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders would expand Medicare to cover almost everyone in the country while giving current Medicare recipients a new menu of potential benefits.

Other Democratic blueprints would allow people to buy into a new government system modeled on Medicare.

Neither includes a detailed accounting of how much it would cost or who would bear the burden of tax increases that would follow.

Sanders fired back Wednesday in a statement saying that Trump ‘has a very difficult time telling the truth about anything’ and ‘is lying about the Medicare for All proposal that I introduced.’

‘Our proposal would not cut benefits for seniors on Medicare. In fact, we expand benefits,’ he claimed.

Trump’s op-ed comes as he is trying to paint Democratic candidates as extreme ahead of next month’s midterm elections.

In his rallies, he has attacked proponents of a newly expanded government-run system, saying it would wreck the existing and popular Medicare program for seniors and disabled people.
