POWERFUL 6.8 earthquake hits Russian Kuril Islands – tremors RICOCHET across region
A POWERFUL magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit the Kuril Islands in Russia at 4.16pm Pacific time (12.16am BST), causing major tremors across the region.

There is no danger of a tsunami, the National Weather Service reported.
The quake struck 177 km (109 miles) south of Severo-Kuril’sk at a depth of 33 km (20 miles), the USGS said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The earthquake was later downgraded to a magnitude 6.3.
The Russian town of Severo-Kurilsk felt the quake as a magnitude 4, which means “often felt but only causes minor damage”.
The town on the island of Paramushir has a population of more than 2,500 residents as per the 2010 census.
Other nearby places that could be affected are: Vilyuchinsk, Kamtsjatka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamtsjatka and Klyuchi, Kamtsjatka – all in Russia.
The Kuril tectonic arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
