JAPANESE troops have shown their military might in joint exercises with US and Filipino troops today in a stunning display of strength. The exercise involved up to fifty unarmed Japanese soldiers in full army uniform replicating a real life combat drill in the San Antonio province of Zambales, Philippines.

The humanitarian support drill involved rampaging onto the beach in an armoured vehicle, marching through the sand picking up the Filipino and American troops playing the role of wounded combatants, and trekking through the sparse bushland.

The Philippines has recently stepped up its military cooperation with the US and also held joint naval exercises with Japan near Scarborough Shoal in 2015.

Washington have denied this exercise was aimed at China despite the ongoing trade-war between the nations.

Last month President Trump imposed tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods and China retaliated by imposing $60bn on US goods.

Japan has its own maritime territorial dispute with Beijing in the East China Sea.

US Marine communications officer, First Lieutenant Zack Doherty, said: “It has nothing to do with a foreign nation or any sort of foreign army.

“This is exclusively counter-terrorism within the Philippines.”

The exercise, codenamed Kamandag (Venom), marked the first time Japanese armoured military vehicles were used on foreign soil since the country adopted a pacifist constitution after its 1945 defeat, said Japan’s Major Koki Inoue.
