Questions abound over the origin of letters sent to the White House and The Pentagon that were found to contain ricin, the highly toxic substance made from castor beans.

Reports suggest that two packages were stopped Monday at a mail facility before they entered the Pentagon. The packages were addressed to U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis and the Navy’s top officer, Admiral John Richardson.

It has now been confirmed that the Secret Service intercepted a third package addressed to the President.

“The envelope was not received at the White House, nor did it ever enter the White House,” a statement noted, adding “We can confirm that we are working jointly with our law enforcement partners to fully investigate this matter.”

In a potentially related incident, a “white powdery substance” was discovered in mail sent to Senator Ted Cruz’s Houston campaign office.

The Houston Fire Department confirmed that the building had been evacuated, and that two people have been hospitalized.

t has not been confirmed if the incidents are linked, or that the substance at Cruz’s office is also ricin.

If inhaled, ricin can cause nausea, vomiting, and ultimately a painful death within hours if the toxins trigger internal bleeding and respiratory failure.

The substance is fairly easy to create with castor beans being readily available. Thus it is considered a crude form of poisoning, certainly not indicative of a sophisticated plot.

In previous incidents involving ricin sent to politicians and authority figures, the perpetrators have been determined to be mentally disturbed individuals.

Last week Senator Cruz was harassed and forced to leave a restaurant by members of a leftist mob, who described the Senator as a ‘fascist’.
