ABA gave Kavanaugh it’s highest rating of ‘very well qualified’
That was before Christine Ford publicly accused him of a 1982 sexual assault

The White House says Kavanaugh has already undergone 6 FBI background checks
Democrats want the confirmation process slowed down and pushed hard on Thursday for the FBI’s involvement

The Senate Judiciary Committee’s top Republican on Friday dismissed a letter from the American Bar Association’s president saying he should stop the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation process until the FBI can undertake and complete a new background check.

Association president Robert Carlson requested the delay in a letter sent to Chairman Charles Grassley and ranking committee Democrat Dianne Feinstein on Thursday evening, following a day of testimony by Christine Blasey Ford who accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her 36 years ago, and by Kavanaugh who denied it.

Fairness and adherence to the U.S. Constitution, he wrote, ‘require nothing less than a careful examination of the accusations and facts by the FBI.’

Grassley was unimpressed, painting the letter as one man’s opinion.

Carlson, he said during a hearing, ‘doesn’t represent the hundreds of thousands of lawyers in the United States. It isn’t at all clear that the ABA president has the authority to speak for the organization on this matter.’

The letter, he added, makes no reference to a consultation with the ABA’s Judicial Qualification Committee.

‘The ABA president’s opinion doesn’t alter the fact that Judge Kavanaugh received a “very well qualified” rating from the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary,’ Grassley said, noting that the organization awarded him its highest rating.

‘The standing committee,’ he noted, ‘did not join this letter.’

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pushed back Friday morning, telling reporters that Kavanaugh has already ‘been through six separate background investigations by the FBI.’

The ABA designated Kavanaugh as ‘well qualified’ following his Supreme Court nomination, its highest rating.
